S&G Motorsport’s David Smith (driver) and Rodger Pedersen (co-driver) prove year after year that “age and treachery” can comfortably outpace “youth and exuberance”. Between them they share north of 110 years of life experience and a sharp sense of humour to match. The pair campaign a 2006 Ford Fiesta ST150 with a particularly interesting backstory: it’s an ex M-Sport Team Abu Dhabi recce car, not the full WRC version, but it still wears its heritage proudly.

The team have enjoyed plenty of highs in recent seasons, including a podium finish in the ARC 2WD Cup at the 2025 Forest Rally, where they collected a trophy that, by their own count, was bigger than Tom Kristensson’s. They have also been regulars in the WA Rally Championship and have taken 2WD class wins at the Karri Rally and the Experts Cup. There have been low points too, with a famously short-lived stage start earning the duo the nickname “Cathy Freeman”, good for 800 metres before a snapped driveshaft brought proceedings to an abrupt halt.
